Student Information - International Students

The study and practice of conflict management and resolution necessarily involve issues of cultural diversity and cross-cultural communication. In today's world, the principles, skills, and understandings that are the underpinnings of our area of study are of obvious importance from the local to the global settings. International students are uniquely positioned to benefit from our program and to carry the fruits of their studies into the wider world. Their varied perspectives add value and richness to our program.

The Office of International Programs at the University has much helpful information for prospective international Graduate Students. If you are an international student considering our program and the University of Oregon, you can get more information at http://oip.uoregon.edu, at http://www.uoregon.edu/~counsel/welcome.htm, and at http://oip.uoregon.edu/internationalgrad.php.

The University also houses the American English Institute (AEI) to which students and professionals come from around the world to study. The AEI offers an Intensive English Program for adults who want to improve their proficiency in English. The program prepares students for academic work at the University of Oregon or similar academic institutions or for professional activities in business and other fields. The curriculum consists of six levels, from basic through advanced. Each level is divided into two combined skill areas: oral communication, which emphasizes speaking and listening, and written communication, which emphasizes reading and writing. All full-time students take basic curriculum courses at the appropriate level. These courses provide a minimum of eighteen class hours per week to which elective hours are added. More information can be found at http://aei.uoregon.edu/iep.html.

In addition to its Intensive English Program, the American English Institute provides courses for international students who are not native speakers of English who have enrolled at the University of Oregon. These AEIS courses include Reading and Vocabulary, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Students may take these courses while they take other courses at the university. You can get more information at http://aei.uoregon.edu/aeis.html.

International students must carry health and accident insurance for themselves and their dependent family members living in the United States. Students' insurance policies must meet the minimum University of Oregon health insurance requirements. These requirements may be met by purchasing the health insurance sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Oregon. This plan may be purchased during the registration process. For more information on health insurance, contact Debbie Alley at the Student Health Center, heaalley@uoregon.edu.
