Philosophy of Conflict Resolution



As a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Oregon, Cheyney Ryan focuses his teaching and research on issues of violence and nonviolence. He has published widely on the ethics of war and peace, and more recently on issues of hope and forgiveness in relation to conflict resolution. Ryan's long-term interest is developing philosophical frameworks for understanding the ongoing practical work in conflict resolution and consensus building. He is a founder of the University of Oregon Peace Studies Program and has been named one of the top figures in peace education by the Washington Post. He has received numerous awards for his work in these areas over the years including "Humanitarian of the Year" from the Oregon Jewish Federation for his work in Holocaust education.
